A couple from Orem said their international adoption was at a standstill while legal teams joined the call demanding the US State Department to evacuate dozens of Haiti an orphans amid civil unrest in the country.

Knee-deep in the adoption process, the Stewarts and their attorneys argued the pre-vetted adoptions could be finalized legally and safely on US soil.Holding a picture of two toddlers, Zach and Cherry said it had been an exhausting 15 months of waiting. “Everything just hit like a very quick shutdown. There were about 101 kids who needed to be brought home who were matched with families already designated legally as their children,” Cherry said.

Because of the unrest and danger the kids face in Haiti, attorneys of adoptive families like the Stewarts are demanding the US government enact what’s called an “emergency humanitarian parole.”
