While the station itself would remain largely unchanged, the seven acres around it could look very different within the next few years. More than 40 million riders boarded UTA trains last year, including daily commuter John Edwards, who said public transit remains the most affordable way for him to get around. “It gets me everywhere pretty fast, it’s cheap and it’s better than having a $500 car payment every month,” Edwards said. UTA’s new master plan calls for turning station areas like North Temple into dense, walkable, transit-oriented communities. Early concepts for the site included more than 500 multifamily housing units, 5,000 square feet of retail space, new internal streets, and additional parking. “These transit-oriented communities will be a big part of our future,” said UTA spokesperson Gavin Gustafson. Some riders said more housing near rail lines could make commuting easier while cutting down on emissions. Edwards supports the idea. “I think the apartments closer to the TRAX are good because then it’s an easy commute and we can down greenhouse gases,” he said. “I think it would be a great thing, actually.” A major question for residents was how much the redevelopment will cost the public. According to UTA, the answer was nothing new. “The land is already owned by UTA, so as far as the cost to the taxpayer, there is none,” Gustafson said. “At one point, when we purchased the land years ago, yes — but we already own the land. So, the developers themselves would pay for the development.” UTA was soliciting proposals from private developers as it prepares the site for future construction.
