He continued that, given the subject’s legislative interest, campuses have “paused any new DEI policies” and asked for a report on current policies. The UT System includes eight academic institutions, including the University of Texas at Austin, UT-Dallas and UT-Arlington. There are also five health institutions, including UT-Southwestern. About 244,000 enrolled students throughout the system.
“Rebranding this employment discrimination as ‘DEI’ does not make the practice any less illegal,” the memo reads.The memo, first reported by the Texas Tribune, has received backlash from Democratic lawmakers in Austin, including members of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and Mexican American Legislative Caucus.
