After the University of Texas at Austin laid off about 60 employees, professors demand that officials rescind termination notices.A group representing University of Texas professors wrote an open letter to UT President Jay Hartzell on Thursday demanding that
Advocates say about 60 employees, who used to do DEI work but were reassigned to other jobs since Jan. 1 when the ban went into effect, were terminated.Hartzell announced the elimination of the Division of Campus and Community Engagement in a message to the school community Tuesday, saying that the decision is part of an effort to “streamline student-facing” programs. Hartzell’s email did not mention layoffs.
The professors’ group told Hartzell that if he had concerns about the university’s compliance with the DEI ban, he can find “remedies that do not violate your previous assurances that no staff member would lose their job at UT Austin due to SB 17.”Hartzell’s announcement of the closure of the Division of Campus and Community Engagement and the recent layoffs came about a week afterletting them know that those that simply change names of programs or jobs would be punished under the DEI ban.
Terminated staff should be told why they are being terminated and have access to a grievance process, the group stressed.
