A UT Health San Antonio professor has been awarded a $2.5 million grant to study alcohol-associated liver disease to reduce the need for transplants.

As the global demand for liver transplants continues to rise, a researcher at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio is looking to develop new, alternative treatments for alcohol-associated liver disease by investigating the root causes of the condition. Mengwei Zang , an internationally recognized leader in chronic liver disease at UT Health San Antonio , has been awarded a five-year $2.

South Texas rainfall totals, HPL prison gang indictments topped the news this week In recent research, Zang showed the key role the lipogenic process plays in the initiation and progression of alcohol-related liver disease. She highlighted excessive ethanol consumption from alcoholic beverages inducing lipid accumulation and disrupting hepatocyte homeostasis, 'which refers to the stability of a cell type important to many liver functions,” the news release explained.

UT's Cockrell School’s graduate engineering program climbs to No. 8 in U.S. News ranking Zang will collaborate with Barshop Institute professors Zianlin Han and Masahiro Morita and Zhijie “Jason” Liu, associate professor and CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research with Mays Cancer Center and the Institute of Biotechnology of the Department of Molecular Medicine.
