, a globetrotting adventurer and businessman, who died in 2015. He was 85. In 1985, Dick Bass put his name indelibly in the history books when he reached the summit of Mount Everest, making him at 55 then the oldest man to climb Everest.
After taking regular family vacations in Aspen, Colo., Dick Bass and his brother purchased stock in a ski resort. In 1964, they bought part of a new Colorado ski area called Vail and increased their holdings until they had a controlling interest. Apart from his business and collecting skills, Harry W. Bass Jr. served as chairman of the Republican Party of Dallas County, in an era when Democrats dominated throughout the South. Aiding then-U.S. Republican Rep. Bruce Alger, Bass took part in staging the consequential “mink coat” demonstration against then-vice presidential candidate Lyndon B. Johnson during John F. Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign.
