UT Dallas president Richard C. Benson is stepping down
President Richard C. Benson, who oversaw dramatic advances at the University of Texas at Dallas, is the latest leader to announce his upcoming departure as higher education in the state comes under increased scrutiny.
However, he faced many of the same tests complicating the higher education landscape across the country. After earning a doctorate, Benson worked in industry for a while, but “I knew in my heart that academia was my path,” he said. “During Dr. Benson’s tenure as president, he has built upon that foundation to strengthen UT Dallas and its reputation as a crucial educational powerhouse in the Dallas-Fort Worth area,” she said.University presidents across the country are under the microscope for how they respond to thorny political issues on campus. The tail end of Benson’s tenure is no exception.About 100 pro-Palestine students held a sit-in along the hallway that leads to the school president’s office in April.
Benson said in August that UTD would comply with the state’s ban on DEI offices – but would not lay off employees working under its DEI office, though some may have different jobs.
