Chris Beard faces a potential prison of sentence of up to 10 years if he is convicted of a third-degree felony.

Beard faces a third-degree felony charge of assault on a family/household member-impede breath circulation.
In its statement, the University said it “takes matters of interpersonal violence involving members of its community seriously” and that “given the information available, The University has suspended Chris Beard from his position as head coach of men’s basketball and will withhold his pay until further notice.” Associate head coach Rodney Terry will serve as acting coach.
When reached for comment Monday morning, the Texas athletic department issued a brief statement: “The University is aware of the situation regarding Chris Beard. We are continuing to gather information and monitoring the legal process.” Defense attorney Perry Minton, who is representing Beard, asserted his client is innocent of the charges.
