The University of Texas in Austin issued a suspension for its students involved in the Palestine Solidarity Committee following its on-campus protest.

Some 57 protesters were arrested on the UT Austin campus earlier this week when the protest in the name of Palestinians in Gaza got out of hand. Police made the arrests while pushing the protest off campus and onto a commercial street. While the university referred to the suspension as “interim,” it remains to be seen when it will be lifted.

Students were suspended from gathering as the Palestine Solidarity Committee due to violating student conduct and integrity rules, the university explained toThe Palestine Solidarity Committee took to Instagram to blast the suspension as “an attack on free speech to distract from and enable Israel’s genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people.” The group asked its Instagram followers, which amount to over 22,000, to call and email the administration.

“We recognize UT’s intimidation tactics for what they are: our suspension is the latest instance of a pattern of censorship. UT’s repression of our free speech reinforces a racist narrative that devalues Palestinian life,” its post read. “As students of diverse backgrounds across the country rise up to defend Palestinian lives, campus administrations like ours are trying to silence our voices. But we will not be silent.
