The United States Postal Service ( USPS ) announced it will suspend regular mail delivery and retail services on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in observance of a national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter . Limited package delivery services will still be available on that day. Normal operations, including retail, delivery, and collection schedules, will resume on Friday, January 10, 2025.
USPS reminded customers that stamps can still be purchased at most grocery, pharmacy, and convenience stores. Additionally, postal products and services are accessible online at USPS.com, where customers can track packages, buy stamps, hold mail, print postage, submit a change of address, schedule a package pickup, and find USPS locations, including self-service kiosks. The Postal Service also offers Informed Delivery, an email preview service for upcoming mail and packages. The USPS, an independent federal establishment, is mandated to be self-financing and serves 169 million addresses across the nation. It operates under the oversight of a bipartisan Board of Governors and is currently implementing a 10-year transformation plan, Delivering for America, aimed at modernizing its network and improving service. The Postal Service generally does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations
