Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter's death prompted a National Day of Mourning, with the USPS closed and mail delivery suspended on January 9, 2025.
Thursday, January 9, 2025, has been designated as a National Day of Mourning for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The Georgia-born politician died on Sunday, December 29, at the age of 100. Carter served in the White House from 1977 to 1981 and is remembered for his years of service, both in the Oval Office and out.
President Joe Biden remarked that President Carter was a man of character, courage, and compassion, whose lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in our history. He embodied the very best of America: A humble servant of God and the people. A state funeral will be held on Thursday, January 9, to honor the former leader. President Biden also declared January 9 as a National Day of Mourning, in which all executive departments and agencies of the federal government will be closed. Since January 9 is not a federal holiday, banks and other financial institutions will be open. However, U.S. stock markets, including the NYSE and the Nasdaq, will be closed out of respect for the former president. The U.S. Postal Service and all its branches will be closed, according to the USPS. The website states: President Joseph R. Biden has declared January 9, 2025 as a national day of mourning, calling on Americans to remember the vast contributions of former President Jimmy Carter. To honor the life and legacy of President Carter, the Postal Service will observe the national day of mourning. As part of the observation, all post office locations will be closed and mail will not be delivered
