The 5-1 loss at Commanders Field was the U.S. team’s worst defeat since 2016.

Colombia had plenty to celebrate in front of its many yellow-clad fans during a 5-1 win over the United States on Saturday at Commanders Field. But little good came out of the 5-1 defeat, a match that began and ended poorly before a crowd of 55,494 and left the United States in need of considerable improvement before major competition arrives.

Jhon Arias cracked open the match in the sixth minute and Rafael Santos Borré scored an acrobatic goal in the 19th before Tim Weah completed a long U.S. possession 12 minutes into the second half. Because Copa América is the biggest test before the United States co-hosts the 2026 World Cup, anything short of a top-two finish in group play and accompanying quarterfinal berth would increase the heat on Berhalter and the U.S. Soccer Federation. All but two of Berhalter’s regulars were available, the exceptions being right back Sergiño Dest and striker Josh Sargent .

For this match, he kept it simple by starting Joe Scally, a German-based right back. Depending how the game unfolded, a tactical switch was available. And he seems likely to try the other option against Brazil in a few days, perhaps with Weah dropping back. The early problems Saturday surfaced on the other side. In the sixth minute, Antonee Robinson made an unnecessary stab on James Rodríguez’s piercing pass, leaving it unattended in the penalty area.
