A new study explores how 'balanced pragmatism' can foster greater respect and affinity between individuals with opposing political views. Researchers investigated a nonprofit program that successfully bridged political divides and found that its effectiveness stemmed from communication styles and methods that promoted understanding and practical solutions. The findings suggest that approaching political discussions with a balanced and pragmatic approach can lead to more constructive interactions and a reduction in animosity.
Respect for opponents increases when they seek to understand and craft practical outcomes for all sides.
Gratitude as part of school curricula is a more novel concept in the United States. The authors acknowledge a cultural and religious aspect to the teaching of gratitude, clarifying the authors’ definition of gratitude beyond simply a human-to-human exercise, extending it to respect and affinity for any object that is a source of happiness or benefit.
The researchers note that in the current Western political climate, people need concrete strategies to encourage cross-partisan respect in daily discourse. They explain balanced pragmatism as an approach to discussing political dilemmas and contentious issues that can help partisans come across as more moral and rational, thereby fostering respect and willingness to engage.
Puryear and Gray asked, “How can people present their views to encourage respectful discourse?” Beyond appearing both moral and rational—because people seldom like talking with those who seem immoral and irrational—the researchers acknowledge the importance of avoiding personal attacks, not falsely caricaturing the other side, receptivity, and focusing on personal experiences of harm rather than facts.
