Users on social media appeared bothered by a recently implemented and little-noticed feature that slows down iPhone charging times in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.
Users spoke out about the iPhone's Clean Energy Charging feature, which Apple introduced in the iOS 16.1 update in October 2022. The feature reviews reports of carbon emissions from local power plants and uses that information to determine if and when the phone recharges. People noticed on Sunday that the feature was activated by default and encouraged users to review their power settings.
"I'm glad Apple is working on dynamic charging to shift to low carbon hour," tweeted Fervo Energy CEO Tim Latimer."BUT the way they rolled it out isn't great. Limited awareness, default position is opted in. We should demand better transparency and choice for clean energy solutions or it's going to backfire." Some of you may have noticed your iPhone is charging a little slower recently it may be due to a new setting Apple added in iOS 16.
— @techie February 26, 2023 Clean Energy Charging works in tandem with the Optimized Battery Charging feature, which uses information about user charging rates to determine the ideal time to charge the battery. Several users were displeased that Apple had implemented the new feature by default."Apple is forcing their ESG [bulls***] on its users," one user tweeted."Don’t let them dictate how you use your $1000 phone."If a user does wish to turn Clean Energy Charging off, they can do so by entering his or her iPhone settings, clicking"Battery," then"Battery Health and Charging," and then turning off the switch titled"Clean Energy Charging.
