The electric SUV market is incredibly crowded, with new models seemingly launching constantly. This makes it easy to overlook the Ford Mustang Mach-E , which first arrived in the UK in 2021. Despite receiving positive initial reviews, the Mach-E didn't generate the kind of buyer frenzy one might expect. Consequently, there are currently more traditional V8 Mustangs advertised than their electric counterparts.
However, the Mach-E presents a compelling proposition as a used car, even if its appeal as a new purchase is less pronounced.\ The Mach-E's value is enhanced by significant depreciation, especially for the Extended Range (ER) model. The ER, equipped with a larger battery, is the preferred choice for most buyers. Given the high initial price of a new ER, which can exceed £51,000, purchasing a used one offers substantial savings. Second-hand ER models are now available for less than £17,000, making them an attractive option. Furthermore, the Mach-E has remained largely unchanged since its launch, inside and out. The real-world range of the ER models is impressive, often achieving around 300 miles even at motorway speeds, thanks to a 91kWh usable battery. The claimed 379-mile range is a selling point, making the ER the most commonly found variant in classified ads. Charging speeds are acceptable, at 150kW. The Standard Range (SR) version, with a claimed range of 273 miles (or 292 miles in later models), offers a cheaper alternative, although the price difference isn't dramatic. Both the SR and ER models are available with all-wheel drive, but opting for rear-wheel drive provides a sweeter ride and avoids a range penalty of up to 50 miles.\Performance is strong across the Mach-E range. The SR with its 261bhp rear-mounted motor can reach 0-62mph in 7 seconds. All-wheel drive versions offer even quicker acceleration, shaving a second off that time. The ER model benefits from a beefier rear motor producing 286bhp, while the all-wheel-drive ER pushes out 346bhp, completing the 0-62mph sprint in just over 5 seconds. The GT model, the most potent version, boasts 480bhp, enabling a sub-4 second 0-62mph time, although this impacts efficiency. The Rally model, a performance-oriented variant, shares the GT's powertrain but has a raised suspension for rough terrains and features WRC-style wheels and tires. Inside, the Mach-E's interior, dominated by a large 16-inch Tesla-style touchscreen, feels modern. Though some drivers desire more physical buttons and higher-quality trim, the cabin's overall design is considered good. Ford strategically avoided placing prominent Ford badges, giving the car a more premium feel, and it has a stylish, practical design. Despite its strengths, some potential issues should be considered when buying a used Mach-E. Potential buyers should inspect paintwork carefully, looking for flaking. Software glitches, such as screen lag and system crashes, have been reported, so testing the car's responsiveness is crucial. Sticky steering wheel buttons, which can require replacing the entire wheel to fix, should also be checked. The 12V battery can fail unexpectedly, so proactive replacement may be needed.
