Improperly disposed of fireworks sparked a fire that destroyed two homes in Parker early Tuesday morning, according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

Used fireworks tossed in a recycling bin outside the garage of one of the homes sparked a fire that destroyed that house and a neighboring house, fire officials said. The blaze was reported shortly after midnight at 10716 Kimball St.

“They thought that because the firework had gone off and had been used, that it was cool enough to throw in the trash and be safe,” said Eric Hurst, spokesman for South Metro Fire Rescue. “Unfortunately every year we respond to fires like this, where people make that mistake…That smoldering heat ends up reigniting and rekindling, and it catches everything in the bin and the plastic bin itself on fire. And at that point, the heat can just run away and start a major fire like we saw this morning.

One family was asleep in their home when the blaze started. At the home where the fireworks were disposed of, a resident noticed smoke and raised the alarm, Hurst said. “Someone woke up and smelled smoke, looked out the window and thought maybe their neighbor had a fire pit going,” Hurst said. “Then started to smell more smoke and could hear the roaring of fire, and at that point they could see a large volume of fire between their house and the neighbor’s house.”

Update: 2 homes have sustained major damage and firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to 3 neighboring homes. Crews continue to work on extinguishing the flames, thankfully no injuries have been reported. Investigators are on scene working to determine the cause. Thank…
