Details have emerged of the drop as the Government prepares to introduce a new ban
Food and drink manufacturers have made significant strides in improving the health profile of their products, slashing salt by a third, sugar by a quarter, and calories by nearly a quarter in an average shopping basket since 2015. This is according to research from Kantar Worldpanel, which highlights that member companies of the Food and Drink Federation have contributed 33% less salt, 25% less sugar, and 24% fewer calories to the UK grocery market compared with six years ago.
This investment has been channelled into altering existing recipes, crafting new, healthier options, and modifying portion sizes to better meet health standards. Notable among these legislative steps is the 'sugar tax', officially known as the Soft Drinks Industry Levy. Introduced in April 2018, this levy imposes a charge of 24p on drinks containing 8g of sugar per 100ml and 18p per litre on beverages with 5-8g of sugar per 100ml, as a move to combat childhood obesity, reports Coventry Live.
This move echoes initiatives first introduced by Boris Johnson's Conservative government back in 2021 but is set to come into force from October 2025. Commenting on the ban, FDF chief scientific officer Kate Halliwell remarked: "Creating delicious and nutritious food and drink is no easy task it takes time, investment and technical expertise.
