U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is increasing its focus on denaturalization, assigning experts to field offices to review the citizenship of naturalized citizens and speed up the process. This initiative aims to identify cases where citizenship may have been obtained through fraud or misrepresentation.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services ( USCIS ) is intensifying its focus on denaturalization cases, deploying specialists to field offices nationwide to scrutinize the citizenship of naturalized citizens. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that the agency, responsible for legal immigration, is reassigning staff and sending experts to offices across the country to assess whether individuals who obtained citizenship through these offices might be subject to denaturalization proceedings.

The aim is to significantly increase the number of potential cases referred to the Department of Justice, with a target of 100 to 200 cases per month. This represents a substantial increase compared to the previous administration's efforts, which resulted in a total of 102 cases filed over four years. This renewed focus is part of a broader effort by the Department of Homeland Security to reduce immigration and implement related policy objectives.\The USCIS spokesman, Matthew Tragesser, stated that the agency reviews cases of naturalized citizens when credible evidence suggests citizenship was obtained through fraud or misrepresentation. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards fraud in the naturalization process, stating that denaturalization proceedings will be pursued against any individual who lied or misrepresented themselves. The agency's commitment includes collaborating with the Department of Justice to ensure that only those who meet citizenship standards retain U.S. citizenship. Current USCIS efforts are concentrated on streamlining the process, with the deployment of specialized staff and training programs across more than 80 field offices nationwide, to more effectively identify potential denaturalization cases than the previous approach which was headquartered in Pasadena, California. The Department of Justice has instructed attorneys to prioritize denaturalization cases, offering examples from individuals who pose a risk to national security, those involved in war crimes or torture, and those who have committed fraud against government programs, such as Medicaid or Medicare. A broad catch-all provision also exists, allowing for the pursuit of any other cases the division deems sufficiently important. The denaturalization process often extends beyond a single presidential administration.\While previous administrations, both Democratic and Republican, have undertaken similar investigations, the pursuit of denaturalization remains relatively rare due to the lengthy and complex legal process, and the high legal standards that must be met. The denaturalization process is often lengthy and time-consuming, and there is a high legal bar. Even if the administration makes the push to investigate someone with the aim to denaturalize, it could take years, and a subsequent deportation would take even longer. The Immigration and Naturalization Act outlines the requirements for naturalization, including being over 18, legal permanent resident status, English proficiency, knowledge of U.S. history and civics, and good moral character. Generally, foreign-born Americans are denaturalized only if fraud is discovered during the application process. Former USCIS officials have expressed the importance of naturalized U.S. citizens understanding that no president can unilaterally strip people of citizenship, which they have worked hard to earn. It is a significant tool that should be used in rare cases
