USC has made a significant addition to its coaching staff by hiring Rob Ryan, a veteran NFL assistant coach, as the Trojans' new assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach. Ryan's impressive resume, which includes coaching some of the NFL's most prominent players, will bolster USC's defensive program as they aim for continued success.
USC has bolstered its defensive coaching staff by hiring former NFL assistant coach Rob Ryan as the Trojans' new assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach, the school announced Saturday. Rob Ryan is considered one of the most accomplished defensive coaches in NFL history, boasting over two decades of experience at the professional level.
According to USC head coach Lincoln Riley, Ryan's extensive resume, which includes coaching some of the NFL's top players, including numerous Hall of Famers and All-Pro selections, will immediately strengthen the Trojans' program as they strive for continued success. \This move comes just two days after USC agreed to a contract extension with D'Anton Lynn to remain the program's defensive coordinator. With this addition, Riley has further solidified his staff, which already includes former Los Angeles Rams and Chargers defensive line coach Eric Henderson. Ryan's most recent role was as the Las Vegas Raiders' senior defensive assistant from 2022 to 2024. The 35-year coaching veteran, with 24 seasons of NFL experience, is the son of legendary coach Buddy Ryan and twin brother of former NFL head coach Rex Ryan. His impressive career spans nine different NFL teams, holding positions as both defensive coordinator and defensive position coach. \Ryan's contributions extend beyond the modern era of the NFL. He played a pivotal role in the New England Patriots' historic Super Bowl victories during the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons, serving as their linebackers coach under the legendary Bill Belichick. His lone foray into college coaching prior to this was in 1999, when he served as the defensive coordinator for Oklahoma State. During his tenure, he transformed a struggling unit that had allowed over 400 yards per game the previous season. In his first year, the Cowboys defense held opponents to a significantly lower 302.7 yards per game, ranking among the top 20 defenses in the nation. Before his time in Stillwater, Ryan gained experience as a graduate assistant at Ohio State and held various coaching positions at Tennessee State, including running backs coach, linebackers coach, and defensive line coach. Ryan steps into the role previously held by Matt Entz, who served as the Trojans' assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach last season. Entz was recently hired as the head coach of Fresno State.
