The United States Agency for International Development ( USAID ) has come under fire, with acting director Rubio stating that the country will continue foreign aid but not in its current, inefficient form. Rubio criticized existing aid programs on SiriusXM's David Webb Show, calling them 'dumb,' 'stupid,' and wasteful of American taxpayer money. He vowed to discontinue these ineffective initiatives.
The agency has been under scrutiny for years, with critics pointing to expenditures on cultural programs abroad and charities linked to Hamas. These concerns were further heightened by the revelation that in 1990, USAID paid for college tuition at Colorado State University for Anwar Al-Awlaki. Al-Awlaki, who falsely claimed Yemeni citizenship to receive the funds, was actually born in America. He later became a high-ranking Al-Qaeda terrorist, killed in a drone strike authorized during the Obama administration. Multiple lawsuits have been filed challenging the rapid changes implemented by the DOGE (Domestic Order and Governance Executive), a new initiative led by the current administration. While many Republicans support these changes, Democrats warn that they could overstep bounds. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., expressed confidence in the DOGE's direction, stating that the courts should allow these processes to unfold. Conversely, Democrats, despite limited options with Republicans controlling both Congress and the White House, are mounting a defense against the DOGE's agenda. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., asserted that Donald Trump cannot circumvent the rule of law. With a looming government shutdown deadline, Democrats hope to leverage this situation to negotiate with Republicans, aiming to prevent a shutdown while simultaneously seeking to restrain the DOGE's actions
