The award to Sierra Nevada was confirmed in December 2023, when the plane manufacturer Boeing cleared that it was not competing for the SAOC contract.
Sierra Nevada Corporation has received a $13 billion contract from the US Air Force to manufacture a replacement for the 1970s E-4B Nightwatch planes in the National Emergency Airborne Command Post role., the contract for the new Survivable Airborne Operations Center is expected to run through July 2036.
SNC has previously worked on the Air Force’s A-29 Super Tucano, M-28 Special Operations aircraft, C-130s, as well as the Army’s Athena ISR program. The SAOC program is one of several multibillion-dollar endeavors the Air Force is undertaking to modernize its nuclear portfolio, ranging from a new nuclear ballistic missile to a long-range stealth bomber, reported, the contract provides for the development and production of the SAOC Weapon System to include the delivery of engineering and manufacturing development aircraft, associated ground systems, production aircraft, and interim contractor support.
