The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposes new rules requiring food manufacturers to display levels of saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar directly on packaging, aiming to encourage healthier choices. The labels, expected to appear on shelves by 2028, will categorize these amounts as 'low,' 'medium,' or 'high.' While experts believe these labels can inform consumers, they also emphasize the need for education on the impact of these nutrients on health. The FDA's proposal follows high rates of diet-related chronic diseases and is subject to a 120-day comment period before finalization.

The new labels will put saturated fat, sodium and added sugar directly in front of shoppers in an effort to nudge people to make healthier choices.Under the new rule, which shoppers could see as early as 2028, food manufacturers will be required to display levels of saturated fat, sodium and added sugar on the front of the packaging.

“I think people want to know this information to help them make good decisions,” said Dr. Yian Gu, a nutrition epidemiologist at the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. However, the extra information won’t do much good if people aren’t aware of how certain nutrients, such as saturated fat, can affect their health, Gu said, adding that more work needs to be done on educating people about their nutrition.

Large food manufacturers will have three years after the rule is finalized to make the changes to most of their products, the agency said. Smaller manufacturers will get an additional year to implement the changes.
