The US Treasury Department has designated the Venezuelan prison gang 'Tren de Aragua' as a significant transnational criminal organization and imposed sanctions against it. The State Department also announced rewards of up to $12 million for information leading to the arrest of key leaders. This move comes amid reports of Tren de Aragua operating in US communities, committing violence against migrants, and engaging in various illicit activities.

They have captured headlines all over the country “Tren de Aragua," a violent new Venezuelan gang that has infiltrated the thousands of migrants entering the U.S. is investigating reports that members of a Venezuelan prison gang, Tren de Aragua, have been living in Aurora and committing violence against members of the migrant community.human smuggling and trafficking, gender-based violence, money laundering, and illicit drug trafficking.

Today’s designation of Tren de Aragua as a significant Transnational Criminal Organization underscores the escalating threat it poses to American communities,” said Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson in a press release. The Treasury's actions mean all property and interests in property of Tren de Aragua in the U.S. or held by Americans must be blocked and reported.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of State announced reward offers totaling up to $12 million for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of several Tren de Aragua leaders.In addition to Tren de Aragua, MS-13, the Latin Kings and the 18th Street Gang are some of the other Latin American gangs in the U.S.30,000-50,000 members in the U.S. and 22,000 members in El Salvador. They also have a strong presence in Guatemala and Honduras.

"18th Street, a well-known and well-established international criminal organization and violent street gang with members and associates residing throughout New York State including Queens and Long Island, and elsewhere throughout the United States including Houston, Texas,"MS-13 is the largest gang in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, per InSight Crime.
