Wall Street will close on January 9th, 2024 to honor the life and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter.

US stock market s will remain closed on January 9th in honor of former President Jimmy Carter , continuing a long tradition on Wall Street of paying tribute to deceased nation leaders. The New York Stock Exchange ( NYSE ) and Nasdaq announced this week that they plan to close their stock and options markets next Thursday in observance of a national day of mourning for the 39th US president and global philanthropist. Carter died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100 years old.

Nasdaq also held a moment of silence the morning of Monday in honor of Carter. And the NYSE stated that it will keep its American flag at half-mast during the mourning period of the late president. Tal Cohen, president of Nasdaq, said in a statement that the exchange would close its markets on January 9th “to celebrate his life and honor his legacy”, referring to Carter. He added that the former president “was a model leader who tirelessly continued his efforts to improve the human condition even after his time in public office”. In another announcement, Lynn Martin, president of the NYSE Group, also noted Carter’s “lasting legacy of humanitarism” and said the exchange planned to honor his life of service. President Joe Biden declared January 9th as a national day of mourning shortly after Carter’s death, which is customary following the passing of a US president. Wall Street also has the tradition of paying tribute to deceased national leaders, and closed its doors on designated days
