EC head Ursula von der Leyen believes the effort will mark a turning point in the fight against coronavirus.
“I believe the fourth of May will mark a turning point in our fight against coronavirus because today the world is coming together,” the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said at the start of the event. As organisers, France’s President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are among those due to speak. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will also speak and make a pledge, according to the protocol list.
Saudi Arabia, the current chair of the Group of 20 industrialised countries, has promised US$500 million. Norway, Turkey and Israel are also expected to pledge.The €7.5 billion target is an initial figure. Von der Leyen has said more money will be needed over time.
