Opinion | The US should boycott the Beijing Olympics. By anthonyLfisher
That's a toothless gesture when China's dictatorship is committing genocide. This is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed are those of the author.last month, saying he was"considering" a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics, which are to be held in Beijing in February 2022.What Biden should have done — and can still do — is call for a total US boycott of the Beijing Games.
That means no diplomats, no athletes, and no question that the US is capable of leading a meaningful protest of the Chinese Communist Party'sof the country's Uyghur Muslim population — among its myriad other crimes against humanity. An Olympic boycott would almost certainly not stop the atrocities in Xinjiang, but it would send a resounding message to the Chinese government on one of the largest international stages. It would also be a clarion call for the rest of the world to stand up and be counted.
Yes, it would be a disaster for NBC, the exclusive US broadcaster of the games. It would dash the dreams of more than 200 US athletes and their trainers and support staff. And it would invite severe reprisals from China. 'You can't boycott us. We're boycotting you!' First and foremost, a total US Olympic boycott would deny China's dictatorship the glorious image it seeks to project: a gracious host country uniting the world in peaceful competition through sport. of the country's Uyghur Muslim population. Millions have been imprisoned, forced into involuntary labor, sterilized, and sent to"reeducation" gulags.
