En declaraciones a nombre de Trump, quien ha exigido que el canal vuelva al control de Estados Unidos, Rubio le informó a Mulino que Trump creía que la presencia de China en el área del canal viola un tratado que llevó a Washington a entregar la vía navegable a Panamá en 1999. Ese tratado exige la neutralidad permanente del canal construido por estadounidenses.
Mulino indicó que Panamá no renovaría su acuerdo con la Iniciativa del Cinturón y Ruta de la Seda de China una vez que expire. Panamá se sumó a la iniciativa, la cual promueve y financia proyectos de infraestructura y desarrollo, después de que el gobierno panameño dejó de reconocer diplomáticamente a Taiwán y reconoció a Beijing.
Rubio también hizo énfasis en el principal enfoque de Trump —frenar la inmigración ilegal—, diciéndole a Mulino que era importante colaborar en las labores y le agradeció por aceptar de vuelta a los migrantes.
“El presidente ha sido bastante claro de que él quiere volver a administrar el canal”, manifestó Rubio el jueves. “Obviamente, los panameños no son grandes fanáticos de esa idea. Ese mensaje ha sido planteado de forma muy clara”.
