Researchers at Washington State University have developed a new method to create sustainable jet fuel from agricultural waste. Their study showcases a continuous process that transforms lignin polymers, a key structural component of plant cells, directly into jet fuel .
“Our achievement takes this technology one step closer to real-world use by providing data that lets us better gauge its feasibility for commercial aviation,” said lead scientist Bin Yang.In 2019, global aviation fuel consumption hit a record high of nearly 100 billion gallons, with demand expected to rise in the coming years.
Aromatics, however, are linked to contrails and climate impact, making lignin a promising alternative. Lignin is a class of structural molecules that give plants their rigidity and is sourced from agricultural byproducts like corn stover—the leftover stalks, cobs, and leaves from harvesting.
