“We’re looking at more of a derivative-type engine solution,” Donnelly explained, suggesting significant differences between the two services regarding their programs and acquisition strategies. Navy officials maintain confidence in the F/A-XX’s suitability and affordability, noting that work on the new fighter began several years before the Air Force initiated its efforts. The first market survey for F/A-XX concepts was issued in 2012.
