U.S. forces struck radar sites after threats to regional maritime traffic.
player ready... WASHINGTON — The U.S. military said it shot down four Iranian drones that were launched toward the Strait of Hormuz on Friday and then struck some of the Islamic Republic’s coastal surveillance radar sites in response.
“The attack drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic,” U.S. Central Command said on social media. The military is enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports in response to Tehran’s chokehold on the crucial corridor for global oil and natural gas shipments, which has sent energy prices spiking.and efforts to reach a deal to extend that truce.
Earlier this week, Iranian drones heavily damaged a passenger terminal at Kuwait’s main airport, killing one person, wounding dozens and briefly closing the airfield. Despite the attacks raising new concerns that the ceasefire could collapse, Trump reiterated this week that he’s certain his administration is on track to successfully wrap up the conflict. His administration also has touted the latest ceasefire agreed to this week by the Lebanese government and Israel after U.S.-brokered talks in Washington.
That’s despite the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group rejecting the agreement and new attacks launched by both sides. The fighting in Lebanon, where Israeli forces have seized large swaths of the south, also threatens efforts to end the Iran war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has demanded that any lasting truce extend to Lebanon.

Iran-linked vessels helped establish the template before and during the early phase of the crisis, and non-sanctioned Gulf tonnage is now increasingly using similar methods. Hundreds of ships remain trapped in the Persian Gulf over risks of attack from Iran and interceptions from the US blockade. Others have instead opted on taking routes closer to Oman's coastline, with the US Navy likely supporting those ships. Despite the apparent increase in ships trying to sneak through the Strait of Hormuz, the level of oil coming out of the Middle East remains low, with larger drops seen in recent weeks.
