Two US lawmakers, Senator Tim Scott and Representative French Hill, have demanded answers from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen following a breach of the US Treasury Department by China-backed hackers.
Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., on Tuesday sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen demanding answers after Chinese hackers breached the U.S. Treasury Department. China-backed hackers in December accessed workstations and unclassified documents through a compromised third-party software provider, the department announced Monday.
It reported having “no evidence” the hackers were still able to access the information, but acknowledged the situation was a “major incident.” 'Treasury takes very seriously all threats against our systems, and the data it holds,' the department wrote. Sen. Scott and Rep. Hill wrote such a breach is alarming considering the sensitive nature of the data within the Treasury Department. Sen. Scott sits on the Senate Banking Committee, while Rep. Hill is the vice chair of the House Financial Services Committee. “This breach of federal government information is extremely concerning,” they wrote. “As such, the fact that a CCP-sponsored APT actor was able to access Treasury’s information systems is unacceptable and raises serious questions about the protocols for safeguarding sensitive federal government information from future cybersecurity incidents.” The lawmakers then demanded Secretary Yellen sit for a hearing to discuss how the breach occurred and whether the department had any cybersecurity concerns prior to it.Aditi Hardikar, an assistant Treasury secretary, said Monday the compromised service is now offline. The Treasury Department is working with the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to determine the full impact of the breach. An unscientific poll of viewers of TNND on Tuesday found 95% feel China represents a threat to U.S. national security.Jackson Walker on X at @_jlwalker_ for the latest trending national news.
