Following the killing of a Palestinian child in Rafah by an Israeli sniper, US lawmaker Rashida Tlaib has renewed her call for a full arms embargo on Israel, condemning the act as a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
US lawmaker Rashida Tlaib has renewed her call for a complete arms embargo against Israel , condemning the killing of a Palestinian child in Rafah as a blatant violation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Tlaib's statement follows the tragic incident on Monday where an Israel i sniper shot and killed a Palestinian child, Zakaria Hamid Yahya Barbakh, and wounded another near Al-Awda Square in central Rafah, in southern Gaza.
Despite the recent ceasefire and prisoner swap deal between Israel and Hamas, this act of violence signals a significant breach of the truce. Tlaib took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express her outrage, stating, 'The Israeli apartheid regime is continuing to kill Palestinian children in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Palestinians have been so dehumanised that it hasn’t even made headlines. The ethnic cleansing has not ended. They will never stop until there’s an arms embargo.' The incident sparked international condemnation, with calls for accountability and an end to the violence. The ceasefire agreement, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the US, came into effect on Sunday. The initial phase is set to last 42 days, during which negotiations for subsequent phases will take place. Under the agreement, Hamas released three Israeli women hostages in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners, predominantly women and children. Tragically, over 47,000 Palestinians have been killed, a majority being women and children, and more than 110,700 wounded in Israel's ongoing conflict with Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to local health authorities. The conflict has resulted in widespread destruction and a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, further intensifying the global scrutiny surrounding the conflict
