US-Iran Conflict Escalates with Strikes Across Middle East, Disrupting Region and Delaying Khamenei Burial

President Donald Trump's decision to end the ceasefire with Iran has triggered a dangerous escalation, with Iran attacking US allies and the US striking Iranian military and nuclear sites, causing regional disruption and affecting Iran's internal politics.

The conflict between the United States and Iran has dramatically intensified, with both sides launching significant military strikes across the Middle East. The escalation began after President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire with Iran "over" and authorized attacks on more than 170 Iranian regime targets.

In retaliation, Iran fired missiles and drones at US allies, including Kuwait and Bahrain, and claimed strikes against US military bases near the Persian Gulf. Jordan, a key US ally, reported that five Iranian ballistic missiles were launched from northwestern Iran toward an air base within its territory, though all were intercepted, prompting sirens to alert civilians.

Meanwhile, US strikes targeted Iranian military assets around the critical Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes. US Central Command stated that various Iranian air defense systems, drones, speedboats, and missile storage sites have been destroyed. The strikes also extended to the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran, where Iranian officials claimed shrapnel from US projectiles hit the perimeter.

The US maintains the operations aim to prevent Iran from attacking commercial shipping in the strategic waterway. The chaos from these strikes has disrupted daily life across the region, delaying flights and causing explosions in several Gulf nations. The conflict has also impacted internal Iranian affairs, postponing the final stage of the funeral procession for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was to be buried in Mashhad.

Hundreds of thousands had mourned in Tehran, but the burial was delayed as military strikes occurred nearby. Iranian state media reported additional infrastructure damage, including a hit on a railway bridge in Golestan province.

At a NATO summit in Turkey, Trump warned of further action, stating, "We're gonna hit 'em hard tonight," and suggested the US might "just finish the job," while also threatening to target Iran's civilian infrastructure like electric and desalination plants and to seize Kharg Island, a key oil production hub. His rhetoric follows a eulogy for Khamenei where a state-backed speaker called for Trump's death.

Trump had previously indicated the fighting would be short-lived, saying anything that happens will happen very fast, though he also left open the possibility of broader military action. The US Central Command reiterated that American forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready to execute orders from the Commander in Chief. The Daily Mail has sought comment from the Pentagon.

Trump also took to Truth Social to share footage of the US strikes on Iranian military positions, highlighting the direct communication from the President during the crisis. The regional violence underscores the fragile state of US-Iran relations and the potential for miscalculation to spiral into a wider conflict, affecting global energy markets and security in the Middle East
