US House Speaker Mike Johnson echoes Senator Lindsey Graham's call for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to resign after a heated White House meeting with President Trump and Vice President Vance.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson is reinforcing recent comments made by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham , who called for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to step down. Speaking on NBC's 'Meet the Press' on Sunday, Johnson stated that 'something has to change' following Zelenskyy 's heated meeting at the White House on Friday with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance regarding the cessation of the war between Russia and Ukraine .
Johnson asserted that Zelenskyy either needs to 'come to his senses and come back to the table, in gratitude, or someone else needs to lead the country to do that.' He emphasized that the decision ultimately lies with the Ukrainians, but affirmed that the U.S. is 're-exerting peace through strength.' Johnson stressed the necessity for President Zelenskyy to take appropriate action, highlighting the prolonged duration of the war and the significant loss of life, including women and children. He urged an end to the conflict. Johnson's remarks follow Senator Graham's statement, a previous supporter of Zelenskyy, who suggested that the Ukrainian president should either 'resign' or 'change' if he desires continued U.S. support in the war against Russia. Graham criticized Zelenskyy's conduct during the Oval Office meeting, stating, 'What I saw in the Oval Office was disrespectful,' and expressing uncertainty about the possibility of future cooperation with Zelenskyy. The confrontation at the White House escalated when Zelenskyy attempted to explain that Russia had exhibited signs of aggression toward Ukraine for over a decade. Vance then accused Zelenskyy of being ungrateful for U.S. assistance. 'I think it's disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media,' Vance told Zelenskyy. President Trump subsequently interjected, at times raising his voice, emphasizing the crucial role U.S. support has played for Ukraine. 'You're not acting at all thankful, and that's not a nice thing,' President Trump told Zelenskyy, before ultimately requesting him to leave the White House. Zelenskyy departed without signing a minerals deal that President Trump stated was a prerequisite for future support for Ukraine. Following the incident, President Trump asserted that Zelenskyy 'overplayed his hand.' Zelenskyy later reaffirmed his stance that Ukraine would not accept any peace agreement without secure guarantees in place. 'We are ready for peace but we have to be in a strong position,' he stated in a Fox News interview. 'What does it mean? Just to know that our army is strong. That our partners are with us. And that we have security guarantees.'
