The latest achievement of Proton the Power Upgrade project shows the US has all it takes to remain a neutron science leader.Scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have achieved a big breakthrough in neutron research. They ran a neutron production system for 1,250 hours using a 1.7-megawatt proton beam.
However, producing neutrons in large numbers is a complex and challenging process as it involves high-energy collisions and materials that could remain stable during such interactions. “Neutron scattering is an essential technique for advancing materials research that supports the U.S. economy and offers solutions to challenges in energy, security, and transportation,” the ORNL team notes. whose goal has been to boost the power of SNS’s proton beam. The powerful 1.7-megawatt beam is also the result of efforts from the PPU team. The main part of SNS is the First Target Station , where this proton beam is currently used to produce neutrons.
