Opposition Senator Leila de Lima on Monday told critics that the United States has a right to impose entry restrictions on foreigners who are deemed responsible for gross human rights violations and abuses for political retribution in their countries.
De Lima, who is currently detained over drug charges at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center, made the statement after Malacañang and some of her Senate colleagues criticized the decision of a US Senate panel to approve the proposed visa ban on Filipino government officials found to be involved in her unjust detention.
De Lima stressed it is the prerogative of the US to impose an entry ban on Filipino officials involved in human rights violations and abuses. De Lima also criticized Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez for “mouthing the propaganda line” of the Duterte regime when he defended the administration’s persecution against her.
