The US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Illinois, Chicago, and Cook County, alleging that their sanctuary city laws hinder President Trump's immigration enforcement policies. The DOJ seeks to halt the implementation of state and local laws they claim interfere with federal immigration enforcement. The lawsuit targets Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, and Cook County leaders, arguing that their programs obstruct federal immigration objectives. Both Johnson and Pritzker have vowed to protect undocumented immigrants who haven't committed other crimes from deportation. The DOJ contends that these policies have resulted in the release of criminals who should have been deported.

The U.S. government filed a lawsuit against the state of Illinois, the city of Chicago, and Cook County on Thursday in Chicago federal court, saying that their sanctuary city laws obstruct President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement policies.

The DOJ outlined how over 13,500 illegal immigrants were detained by ICE officials between 2016 and 2025 in Illinois, along with 11,036 detainers lodged for individuals held by local law enforcement. Some were accused or convicted of serious or violent crimes, and the complaint gives examples of when some individuals were released because detainers were allegedly ignored.
