The 2025 fiscal year, commencing in October 2024, saw the Treasury Department attribute the surplus to large individual tax deposits, coinciding with the deadline for final payments for the previous year's taxes and the first quarterly estimates for individual and business taxes.Individual income taxes, the primary revenue generator for the U.S. government in April, contributed $537 billion this year. Corporate taxes added $94 billion, while retirement receipts generated $184 billion. Notably, tariff revenue reached $15.6 billion, doubling its April 2024 amount, reflecting the impact of tariffs imposed the previous month by the Trump administration. Despite this increase, tariffs remain a relatively smaller contributor compared to other revenue sources. On the expenditure side, Social Security received $132 billion, Medicare $82 billion, health programs $76 billion, and national defense $70 billion. However, for the entire 2025 fiscal year, from October 1 to April 30, the U.S. government spent approximately $4 trillion, collecting only $3 trillion in revenue, resulting in a cumulative deficit of $1 trillion. This substantial April surplus did little to stem the rising national debt, which currently stands at $36.212 trillion
