United States fighter jets have struck two locations in eastern Syria linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Pentagon has confirmed.

Airstrikes were launched by the military about 4.30am on Friday, in response to recent drone and missile attacks on US bases and troops in the region early last week.

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin said the retaliatory strikes were a statement of intent showing the United States' would continued to defend itself. “The United States does not seek conflict and has no intention nor desire to engage in further hostilities, but these Iranian-backed attacks against U.S. forces are unacceptable and must stop,” he said.
