Americans, particularly younger Americans, are less happy, according to a new report from Gallup.

S. ranked 23rd among 143 countries.Gallup assigns life evaluation scores for people in each country, based on a 10-point scale.“In all different age groups, life evaluations have come down slightly,” said Julie Ray, managing editor for Global News at Gallup. “But the biggest shift has been among the Americans under 30.”Older Americans are still pretty happy, ranking 10th in the world with a score of 7.3 on the 10-point scale.Ray said younger Americans used to be about as happy as older Americans.But that’s not true everywhere. Younger people are happier than older people when taking the world as a whole. And it’s true of people in Europe, Asia and Latin America. But older people are at least 50 places higher in the happiness rankings than their younger counterparts in both the U.S. and Canada. “The world collects data on so many different things ... but what this does is it measures how people feel, and that's something that's missing from a lot of metrics,” Ray said. “And it's an important part of the discussion. It tells you more than and some of these hard numbers can, because they don't get at people's day-to-day experiences.”“We have other data that shows some of it has to do with their social support and their social interactions and they're loneliness,” Ray said. Younger Americans, it seems, are less likely to feel like they have people they can count on when they need help. About half of adults in America reported experiencing loneliness, with some of the highest rates among young people, according to the surgeon general’s advisory. The loneliness epidemic had been growing for years, even before the isolation brought on by the pandemic, according to the surgeon general. Dr. Vivek Murthy’s advisory said that trust in each other and major institutions was at near historic lows, polarization was near historic highs, social groups were smaller, and people were spending more time alone. The decline in time spent with friends was starkest for young people, down nearly 70% over the last couple of decades. Family size and marriage rates have been in steady decline, according to the report. The share of single-person households more than doubled since 1960. And fewer Americans were part of traditional community groups, such as churches, clubs and labor unions. Less than half of Americans belonged to a church, synagogue, or mosque in 2020, down from 70% in 1999. Ray said younger people in some other countries feel that they have more robust social support systems. Finland, Denmark and Iceland were the happiest countries overall this year, according to the Gallup report. Finland has ranked as the happiest country in the world for seven years running.Lithuania, Israel and Serbia were the happiest countries for younger people.
