The federal government is deploying a drone detection system to New York State to investigate recent drone sightings that have alarmed residents.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Sunday that the federal government is deploying a drone detection system to the state to aid in investigations into recent drone sightings. 'In response to my calls for additional resources, our federal partners are deploying a state-of-the-art drone detection system to New York State. This system will support state and federal law enforcement in their investigations,' Hochul said in a statement.
The news comes as officials in New York and New Jersey are urging the federal government to take stronger action to investigate the drone sightings that have alarmed local residents.Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie said he saw a drone over his house two mornings ago at 6:15 in the morning. 'I saw them and so did my wife. I can't tell you the number of people concerned about it,' Christie said. Now the feds are working to quash worries as the rash of mysterious drone sightings has those in the tri-state demanding answers about where the objects are coming from. FBI officials are saying out of the 5,000 reported sightings, less than 100 are credible, saying in most situations, the sightings are a case of mistaken identity. The Department of Homeland Security's Alejandro Mayorkas reinforced the same message. 'Some of the drone sightings are in fact drones – some are manned aircrafts commonly mistaken for drones, and we do see duplicative reporting. But there is no question drones are being reported,' Mayorkas said.Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he is taking action. 'I will cosponsor legislation that will help combat these drones that will help local and state police departments help feds in citing these drones,' Schumer said. Dozens of witnesses have reported seeing them in the state starting in Novembe
