The Biden administration is 'certainly interested in expediting' the delivery of key air defense systems to Ukraine, John Kirby, the National Security Council's communications coordinator, said.

The Biden administration is"certainly interested in expediting" the delivery of key air defense systems to Ukraine, John Kirby, the National Security Council's communications coordinator, said.

Specifically, the administration is working to speed up the delivery of two National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems to Ukraine. The first two systems will get there “in the very near future,” Kirby said during a briefing with reporters on Tuesday, though he declined to narrow down that time frame.

Ukrainian leaders reiterated their desire for additional air defense systems on Monday following a barrage of Russian missile and rocket fire across Ukraine in more than 10 cities. The Russians conducted 84 cruise missiles and 24 drone attacks, about half of which Ukraine was able to intercept, the Ukrainian General Staff said, leaving roughly a dozen civilians dead and another 100 injured.

It was presumably in retaliation for an explosion damaging the Kerch Bridge that links Russia to the Crimean Peninsula.“Productive conversation with [Biden],” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said of his conversation with the U.S. president on Monday. “Air defense is currently the No. 1 priority in our defense cooperation.”

The topic of Ukrainian air defense will presumably be a primary topic for this week's NATO Defense Ministerial and a meeting for the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is attending.
