The U.S. Capitol Police are implementing a range of security measures to prevent another January 6th incident.
In the four years since the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, authorities have been planning and training to prevent anything like that from happening again. With the certification of another election just days away, the U.S. Capitol Police are breaking down what their preparations have entailed.“We have already been ramping up security, as planned, ahead of a busy month at the U.S. Capitol,” the department wrote in a statement.
The department has built a new intelligence bureau to collect, analyze, and share intelligence with other departments throughout the District.They said they have also enhanced their ability to react to disturbances by creating a new Rapid Response Team, along with expanding their medical program and ramping up their bicycle response team.They said an aggressive approach has built up their ranks, adding 350 more officers than they had four years ago. In addition to those steps, U.S. Capitol Police have been on the ground carrying out drills and exercises with officers from 16 different agencies. They said that is an improvement in training that completes a key recommendation by the Inspector General
