Turkey says warlord Khalifa Haftar must choose political solution to end Libya's crisis, while US asks Haftar to 'immediately' remove blockade of oilfields there
US says oil exports blocked by illegal militia of Khalifa Haftar must"resume" immediately, while Turkey's FM Mevlut Cavusoglu says Haftar must choose"political solution."
The Libyan NOC confirmed it had invoked force majeure on oil exports from two key southern fields, a clause that allows for a failure to fulfill international contracts due to a sudden disruptive event. "Does Haftar want a political or military solution? Until now, his stance has shown he wants a military one," he told Turkish broadcaster NTV at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
A doctor and resident of southern Tripoli, Mohamed Malek, 27, said he fled his neighborhood late Sunday when he heard sporadic exchanges of gunfire. Dozens of militiamen from tribal groups loyal to Hafter continued on Monday to camp out in the two southern oil fields, al-Sharara, Libya’s largest, and al-Feel.
The shut-down of production in the south follows the weekend closure of all eastern export terminals.Oil, the lifeline of Libya’s economy, has long been a key factor in the civil war, as rival authorities jostle for control of oil fields and state revenue. Libya has the ninth-largest known oil reserves in the world and the biggest oil reserves in Africa.
