US calls for halt to Libya offensive as clashes rage via SABCNewsOnline
Forces loyal to Libya's UN-backed unity government have sent reinforcements to push back an advance on Tripoli by fighters of strongman Khalifa Haftar.Khalifa HaftarHaftar’s forces and the UN-backed unity government exchanged air strikes Sunday; three days after Haftar launched an offensive to seize the capital.
“This unilateral military campaign against Tripoli is endangering civilians and undermining prospects for a better future for all Libyans,” he added. Colonel Mohamed Gnounou told reporters on Sunday forces had launched operation “Volcano of Anger” aimed at “purging all Libyan cities of aggressor and illegitimate forces”, in reference to Haftar’s fighters.
Emergency services spokesman Oussama Ali said rescuers “have not been able to enter” the battle zones.
