Food safety advocates celebrated the news that U.S. regulators are banning Red No. 3 , an artificial dye used in thousands of foods, beverages, and sweets. The Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) announced the ban, effective starting in 2027, following decades of concerns about the additive's safety. Supporters of the ban, including the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Environmental Working Group, expressed confidence that the transition away from Red No.
3 would be smooth and swift. They pointed out that the dye has already been banned in the European Union and some other countries, and many companies that sell products internationally have already reformulated recipes to exclude it. California, the first state to ban Red No. 3 in products sold there, set the stage for the nationwide ban with its legislation taking effect in 2027. Advocates argue that the ban won't result in any products disappearing from U.S. supermarkets, as companies can simply switch to readily available natural alternatives, such as beet juice or pomegranate juice. They also stressed that these natural options are often more cost-effective than artificial dyes, contradicting the perception that they are more expensive. The FDA maintains that it cannot authorize food additives that have been found to cause cancer in either humans or animals, despite the International Association of Color Manufacturers' (IACM) argument that the ban is based on evidence from animal studies, not human trials. However, several food manufacturers have already begun phasing out Red No. 3. Ferrara, known for Brach's candy corn, stated that they started eliminating the dye in early 2023 and aim to be completely free of it by the end of 2026. Just Born, the maker of Peeps, confirmed that they stopped using Red No. 3 after last Easter. The Consumer Brands Association, a trade group representing food and beverage companies, assured the public that safety remains their top priority and they will continue to comply with all regulations.
