The US Army's converted diesel locomotive can operate continuously for 12 hours using lithium ion batteries.

Energy officials and installation leadership gathered at Fort Hood on Dec. 15 to mark an important milestone for the modernization of Army transportation. A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Rail s Operation Center unveiled the service’s first 100% battery-powered locomotive.

For the project, an Army-owned diesel locomotive was converted into an ATLAS 100% electric locomotive that uses lithium-ion battery technology.Officials say the new project strengthens operational readiness while advancing resilience and sustainability. The electric locomotive was designed to reduce maintenance and fuel costs while also significantly lowering carbon emissions. ATLAS train recharges in 2.5 hoursThe 100% electric locomotive will be integrated into daily rail yard operations, moving rail cars and handling heavy loads at Ford Hood, a crucial military logistics hub for deploying heavy equipment. The train’s battery can operate continuously for 12 hours, fully recharge in about two-and-a-half hours, and recover energy through regenerative braking. The ATLAS train project is part of a broader initiative the Army is carrying out in partnership with Dominion Energy, Fort Hood’s utility privatization partner for electric and natural gas systems. The effort was funded by a Defense Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant requested by the city of Harker Heights and approved through the State of Texas Military Preparedness Council.“We mark a truly historic moment here today, the commissioning of the US Army’s first all-electric locomotive right here at The Great Place,” Lt. Gen. Kevin D. Admiral, commanding general of III Armored Corps and Fort Hood, explained in a press statement. “This achievement represents a major step forward in Army modernization, resilience, and sustainability.”A ‘mobile energy platform’Impressively, the electric train can also store power and feed it back to the Rail Operations Center and nearby facilities for up to 48 hours during emergencies.“It’s a mobile energy platform … in times of grid stress or emergencies, the system can keep the Rail Operations Center in the fight,” said Kevin Mann, director, Federal Energy Solutions, Dominion Energy.Overall, the new train is a “true all of the above approach to energy,” Mann continued. “This locomotive enables our warfighters and increases lethality. They can operate using power from the ERCOT grid, natural gas, solar, wind, and even nuclear energy.”Fort Hood is the Army’s busiest railhead. In the fiscal year 2025, the military logistics hub moved 157 trains and more than 8,500 rail cars, shipping over 243,000 short tons of equipment. The electric train conversion is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by more than 308 metric tons and save over $50,000 in fuel costs.“These are real, measurable gains that strengthen readiness while conserving our finite resources,” Admiral said, calling the locomotive “a symbol of progress, partnership, and the Army’s commitment to a sustainable, resilient, and technologically advanced future.”
