The weather warning starts from Thursday 29 August, with forecasters saying it will get worse over the weekend.
Holidaymakers on their way to Italy this weekend have been warned to prepare for intense heat of up to 39C.
To add to the discomfort, above-average sea surface temperatures in the Mediterranean are set to cause high humidity, which can lead to fatigue and dehydration. The Ministry of Health also warns that visitors and locals should drink at least one and a half litres of water a day, avoid physical activity outdoors and stay inside during the hottest hours of the day .
