A bridge in Riverdale, Utah, is undergoing urgent repairs after a large pothole unexpectedly appeared. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is working to patch the hole, which measures 9 feet by 15 feet, and expects the work to be completed by Friday. This bridge is also scheduled for a full replacement project in 2025.
A significant repair project is underway on a bridge in Riverdale as crews work to patch a large pothole that formed unexpectedly. The bridge, located on 4400 South near I-84, is one of the over 3,000 bridges in Utah managed by the Utah Department of Transportation. The hole, which measures 9 feet by 15 feet, appeared Monday and has prompted action by UDOT to get to the repairs. The work is expected to be completed by Friday.
Local resident Brody Kodelle, who frequently uses the sidewalk beneath the bridge, described the surprise closure of the area. 'You couldn’t walk through here for about up until 10 years ago,' he said, noting that he had just discovered the closure as he was walking down the street. A large chunk of the roadway is currently being removed by road crews. The pothole that caused the damage is located where the concrete is crumbling. UDOT Bridge Management Engineer Becky Nix explained that potholes like these form due to the freeze-thaw cycles and the salt used to treat roads during the winter.According to Nix, all public bridges in Utah are inspected every two years, but this particular bridge has been monitored more frequently due to its condition.'Once we get this fixed, there won’t be any safety concerns,' she said, noting that UDOT immediately closed the affected lane upon discovering the pothole. Though the current pothole repair work is expected to be finished by Friday, the bridge is also slated for a full replacement project, which is set to begin in the spring of 2025. Nix said, 'This bridge is in design for replacement right now, so it is one that we are actively looking at for a larger project.' For Kodelle, while the detours may cause a slight delay, he doesn't mind as long as the roads are kept in good conditio
