After the tragic flooding after the Thomas fire in Santa Barbara in 2017, authorities put debris removal on fast-track.

A large swath of burned homes from the Eaton fire is seen near the intersection of McNally Avenue and W. Mariposa Street in Altadena on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025. to fast-track the debris removal from the scarred areas. The two fires have consumed nearly 40,000 acres and destroyed or damaged 12,000 structures.

Chris Tragos and his daughter, Charlotte, embrace while standing in the rubble of their 1927 Spanish-style home on Boedoin Street in Pacific Palisades. “I don’t know what we’re going to do,” Chris Tragos said on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025. ”I want the community to survive this, but I dont know how,” he said as his voice trailed off. “There’s absolutely a concern with it,” said Bryan Lewis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Newsom’s order called for the Office of Emergency Services to coordinate a plan with Los Angeles County, FEMA and the cities of L.A., Malibu, Pasadena, Sierra Madre and other potentially impacted cities to put debris removal on the fast track. It’s important to remove debris including sediment, trees, foliage — and rubble from homes Laber said, so it doesn’t “bulk” up, and so the debris basins in local foothills can retain their capacity to capture the sediments.Newsom’s fast-track on debris comes amid a larger push by local and state officials to remove red tape in efforts to rebuild and recover from the fires..

Laber noted that while this appears to be a La Niña year, when cooler temperatures in the Pacific point to drier conditions, having less rain could also trigger dangerous flooding. Residents in the areas of the Eaton fire, in Pasadena and Altadena, can see it everywhere, strewn across front yards and lining city streets.
